Chapter 9: Leavetakings
Rand joins Ingtar's armed column in the Fal Dara courtyard as the hunt for the Horn of Valere prepares to depart. Lan teaches him one final lesson—Sheathing the Sword, the willingness to let the blade be sheathed in your own body when the price is worth the gain. An arrow narrowly misses Rand and grazes the Amyrlin Seat's arm, killing a man behind her; she implies the shot was meant for Rand. Ingtar introduces Hurin, a sniffer who can smell violence and track those who commit it. Hurin picks up the Trollocs' trail leading south—not toward the Blight—and the column rides out.
In Illian, Captain Bayle Domon meets Cairhienin agents who offer him a thousand gold marks to sail east, the fourth such suspicious commission. When his crewman Carn is murdered and men try to board the Spray, Domon opens the sealed parchment and finds it names him a Darkfriend, signed by King Galldrian of Cairhien. Among his collected curiosities is a disk of cuendillar bearing the ancient Aes Sedai symbol. Certain that Darkfriends are pursuing him for his possessions, Domon sails west toward Toman Head and Arad Doman instead.
