Lan escorts Rand to the Amyrlin Seat. In her chambers, with Moiraine and Verin present, the Amyrlin tells Rand he can channel and then declares him the Dragon Reborn—Moiraine recounts how Gitara Moroso had a Foretelling on the morning the Aiel War ended that the Dragon was reborn on the slopes of Dragonmount, and that she has spent twenty years searching for him.

Rand refuses to accept it and vows he will not be used, but chooses to ride with Ingtar to recover the Horn and Mat's dagger.

Meanwhile, Nynaeve senses a great storm that does not match the clear sky and searches for Rand; she encounters Lan, who gives her the signet ring of the Malkieri kings and calls her 'mashiara'—beloved but lost. Egwene prepares to depart for Tar Valon and shares a painful farewell with Rand, who tells her he is done with Aes Sedai and asks her not to choose the Red Ajah.
