Moiraine, Verin, and the Amyrlin Seat complete a grueling all-night Healing of Mat using Moiraine's angreal, but without the stolen dagger the cure is incomplete—he will live only months at best.

Verin reads aloud a dark prophecy found on the dungeon walls, which speaks of Lanfear walking again, a man who channels, and mysterious figures named Luc and Isam, as well as the Watchers on Toman Head and the seed of Artur Hawkwing. Verin then stuns both women by deducing that one of Moiraine's three young men can channel and must be the Dragon Reborn.

Meanwhile, Perrin visits Mat in the infirmary, and Rand argues with Perrin and resolves to leave, but Lan arrives to escort him to the Amyrlin, coaching him in protocol and pinning the Red Eagle of Manetheren to his arm.
