Rand wakes from a nightmare in Egwene's room in the women's apartments. Alarm bells shatter the night—Trollocs have invaded Fal Dara keep.

Rand fights his way through corridors and descends to the dungeon, where he finds the guards butchered and dark prophecy scrawled in blood on the walls, including a message addressed to him: 'WE WILL MEET AGAIN ON TOMAN HEAD.' Fain has escaped, Egwene lies unconscious, and Mat is deathly ill—his ruby-hilted dagger from Shadar Logoth has been stolen.

Liandrin confronts Rand with the One Power before Moiraine intervenes, and Ingtar reveals that the Horn of Valere has been stolen from the strongroom by Trollocs who entered through a gate opened by a traitor within.
