Chapter 24: New Friends and Old Enemies

On her first morning as a novice in the White Tower, Egwene is paired with Elayne, who turns out to be the Daughter-Heir of Andor. Both were born with the spark, and during their lesson each sees the glow of saidar around the other for the first time. Elayne warns that Elaida, her mother's Red Ajah councilor, has been searching for Rand since he left Caemlyn, and that she would not tell the Aes Sedai where to find him.

In the corridor they pass Logain, the gentled false Dragon, hollow-voiced and watched at every step. Elayne takes Egwene into the garden to meet Min, summoned to the Tower so the sisters can study how she reads auras and images. Two young men arrive from sword practice: Gawyn, Elayne's brother, and their half-brother Galad, who asks leave to see Egwene again. The three young women promise on the bridge to let no man come between them.

Elaida arrives and coldly puts Elayne in her place as a novice, then sends the girls off to chores so she can question Min alone.

Left with the Aes Sedai, Min keeps a steady face and denies any knowledge of Rand. Once Elaida is gone, she frets over how the Red sister knew Moiraine had summoned her, a secret she had thought safe, and over what either Aes Sedai wants with a farmboy she has met only once.
