Chapter 21: The Nine Rings

Rand, Loial, Hurin, and Selene stop for the night at the Nine Rings inn in Tremonsien, where the innkeeper Maglin Madwen makes them welcome. Rand plays his flute for the common room, drawing the attention of a table of off-duty soldiers and their officer.

The officer, Captain Caldevwin, joins them and probes Rand with pointed questions. He is overseeing the excavation of a vast Age of Legends statue nearby, which King Galldrian has ordered moved to Cairhien as a monument to House Riatin. Selene retires early, pleading illness. Hurin and Loial later explain Daes Dae'mar, the Game of Houses, and warn that Caldevwin's suspicion is part of it.

By morning Selene has slipped past Caldevwin's posted watch and gone, leaving only a sealed note stamped with a crescent moon and stars, promising to await Rand in Cairhien. The officer Tavolin and fifty soldiers form up to escort the party on toward the capital.
