Chapter 16: In the Mirror of Darkness

Riding south through the colorless mirror world, Rand, Loial, and Hurin discover that Hawkwing's victory monument has been recast here as a Trolloc triumph spire—its face carved with Trolloc band symbols and a slain hawk at its base—leading Loial to conclude this is a world where the Shadow won.

A woman's screams draw Rand to rescue a stranded Cairhienin noblewoman, Selene, from a grolm—a massive, three-eyed creature—by killing it with an arrow to its central eye. Selene proves extraordinarily learned about these 'worlds that might be,' explaining that Age of Legends Aes Sedai studied them and that this study formed the basis of the Ways, that a book called *Mirrors of the Wheel* documents them, and that Rand's void technique is called 'the Oneness'; she also heals his burned palm rapidly with a salve.

She urges him to escort her to a Portal Stone in Kinslayer's Dagger—visible looming to the south—so she can return home to Cairhien, but Rand refuses to risk channeling saidin and insists on following the trail of the Horn first. The chapter ends as five grolm crest a hill and charge toward the group.
