With Rand, Loial, and Hurin gone without a trace, Ingtar's hunt is stalled—without a sniffer, he cannot follow the Darkfriends' trail. Perrin, accepting what he can no longer deny, reaches out through his wolf bond and makes contact with a local pack, who reveal that wolves know him by the name Young Bull.

The wolves confirm the Darkfriends and Trollocs went south, and also relay horrifying images of the villagers from the abandoned village having been massacred by Trollocs. Perrin tells Ingtar the trail leads south, and Ingtar covers for him by announcing to the soldiers that Perrin is a sniffer.

Verin arrives on horseback, claiming Moiraine sent her; she is far more interested in questioning Ingtar about Rand than in finding the Horn of Valere.
