Egwene departs Fal Dara with the Amyrlin Seat's column, heading south and west toward Tar Valon. Each night a different Aes Sedai visits their tent to give Egwene channeling lessons. Verin comes first, explaining that Egwene has been channeling ahead of herself—without proper control, she could harm herself or others. During Verin's lesson, Nynaeve accidentally sets the blankets ablaze when anger triggers her channeling. Alviarin is cool and businesslike, Alanna is friendly but asks too many questions about the three boys, and Liandrin teaches little but interrogates them relentlessly about Rand, Perrin, and Mat until Nynaeve throws her out.

At the village of Medo on the River Mora, Egwene discovers that Moiraine, Liandrin, and Verin have all vanished without explanation. She confides in Anaiya about a vivid dream of Rand in danger—a masked man with fire for eyes, and a woman with moonlit eyes standing over Rand before both vanished—and Anaiya suggests Egwene may be a Dreamer, a talent not seen in four or five hundred years.
