Chapter 11: Glimmers of the Pattern

At camp south of the River Erinin, Ingtar gives Rand a bundle from Moiraine and reveals that Rand has been named second in command—if Ingtar falls, the lances follow Rand, by Lord Agelmar's order. The bundle contains the Dragon Banner, the banner of Lews Therin Telamon from the War of the Shadow.

When Mat and Perrin discover the banner, Rand confesses that he can channel—Mat is horrified but softens when he realizes Rand came along to help find the dagger, while Perrin advises him to run.

Meanwhile, Padan Fain camps farther south with his Darkfriends and Trollocs; transformed by his time in Shadar Logoth, he now commands the Trollocs through sheer terror and carries the ruby-hilted dagger. He reveals it was he who nailed the Myrddraal to the door, orders the remaining villagers killed, and declares he is heading for Toman Head.
