Chapter 10: The Hunt Begins
Ingtar leads the column south at a punishing pace, with Hurin following the scent trail. Mat and Perrin avoid Rand, refusing to ride near him. Around the campfire, Ingtar reveals that Masema's hostility stems from fighting Aiel for three years at Ankor Dail—he cannot stop seeing the Aiel in Rand's face.
South of the River Erinin, they discover Changu and Nidao skinned alive and hung from a tree; Ingtar buries them with Shienaran rites despite suspecting them of opening the Dog Gate. The trail zigzags daily with a murder at each turning point. They reach an empty village where the people have vanished.
Rand enters a house and is trapped in a freezing, repeating vision of a family's last terrified moments before breaking free. In the village square, they find a Myrddraal nailed to the meeting-hall doors—killed by someone or something unknown.
