Chapter 9: Tellings of the Wheel

Rand wakes from a nightmare of a barren land and a terrifying black mountain, where a voice whispered for him to serve. When Tam wakes, he warns Rand to be careful around Aes Sedai—they do not lie, but the truth they tell is not always the truth you think it is. He gives Rand his sword to keep.

Outside, a mob led by Hari and Darl Coplin confronts Moiraine, demanding she leave Emond's Field. Bran al'Vere and Haral Luhhan defend her, and Moiraine tells the story of Manetheren—an ancient kingdom that once stood where the Two Rivers is now, destroyed two thousand years ago in the Trolloc Wars.

The Two Rivers people are the descendants of Manetheren, and Emond's Field is where the last battle was fought. Shamed, the mob disperses. Rand and Mat prepare to depart into the night.
