Moiraine heals Tam using the One Power and an angreal—an ivory figurine that enhances her abilities. Lan explains that the black-cloaked rider Rand saw was a Myrddraal, a Trolloc throwback with terrifying powers whose very gaze inspires fear.

Moiraine reveals a disturbing truth: the Trolloc attack was not random. They specifically targeted Rand, Mat, and Perrin—only their homes were attacked. The Dark One fears something in these three young men.

To protect Emond's Field from future attacks, they must leave. Moiraine proposes they travel to Tar Valon, the one place where they will be safe, and they will depart after nightfall.
