Chapter 7: Out of the Woods

Rand reaches Emond's Field at dawn to find half the village burned and bonfires consuming Trolloc corpses. Nynaeve examines Tam's wound and tells him there is nothing she can do.

Bran al'Vere and Thom Merrilin explain that Moiraine is Aes Sedai and Lan her Warder. She called ball lightning down on the Trollocs during the attack. Aes Sedai can sometimes heal where medicine fails, and the Mayor urges Rand to ask her, despite the village's distrust of Tar Valon.

Rand finds Moiraine and Lan at the bonfires, where Lan is stripping badges from the dead. Seven Trolloc bands took part in the raid, more than have acted together since the Trolloc Wars. Moiraine agrees to come and do what she can for Tam, warning that prices will be discussed later.
