Chapter 7: Out of the Woods

Rand arrives at Emond's Field at dawn to find the village devastated—half the houses burned, villagers sifting through rubble, and bonfires consuming Trolloc corpses. Nynaeve tells him Tam's wound is beyond her skill to heal.

From Bran al'Vere and Thom Merrilin, Rand learns that Moiraine is an Aes Sedai who called ball lightning against the Trollocs, and Lan is her Warder.

Desperate to save his father, Rand seeks out Moiraine at the bonfires where she examines Trolloc badges, noting that seven bands attacked together—something not seen since the Trolloc Wars. Despite his fear of Aes Sedai and their reputation, Rand begs for her help, and she agrees to do what she can.
