Chapter 6: The Westwood

Rand struggles through the Westwood, hauling Tam on the litter toward Emond's Field. Tam burns with fever from the Trolloc's tainted blade and begins speaking in delirium.

He speaks of the Aiel War, of serving with the Illianer Companions, and of finding an infant on the slopes of Dragonmount—a baby born to an Aiel maiden who died in childbirth. Tam named the child Rand and brought him home to the Two Rivers.

Rand refuses to believe what he is hearing, telling himself it is only fever-talk. When he finally reaches the village, he finds Emond's Field has also been attacked, with buildings burned and people gathering the wounded.
