Chapter 5: Winternight

Rand and Tam are attacked at their farm in the Westwood on Winternight. Trollocs—beast-men from the Blight of legend—burst through the door, and Tam fights them with a sword Rand has never seen before, its blade marked with a heron.

Rand kills a Trolloc with his bow and witnesses a Myrddraal—a pale, eyeless figure in black—commanding the creatures. Tam is gravely wounded by a Trolloc blade.

After the attack, Rand constructs a makeshift litter and begins the desperate journey through the night toward Emond's Field, dragging his unconscious father behind him.
