Chapter 49: The Dark One Stirs
The party rides north through the deepening Blight toward the Mountains of Dhoom, where corrupted trees lash at them and monstrous creatures attack from all sides. Rand fights with his heron-mark blade shouting 'Manetheren!', Mat looses arrows while crying the Old Tongue battle cries, and Perrin hews a path with his axe, his golden eyes making creatures shy away. Moiraine hurls fireballs and Lan rides repeatedly into the trees to fight, but the assault only breaks when the distant piping of Worms—creatures that can kill a Fade—scatters every living thing in the Blight.
Fleeing the Wormpack at a gallop, the party crosses into a green, peaceful land untouched by corruption—the domain of the Green Man, who appears as a towering figure of living vines and leaves.
The Green Man greets Loial warmly, calls Perrin a Wolfbrother, and addresses Rand as 'Child of the Dragon,' though his scarred memories cannot explain why. Moiraine declares they have reached the Eye of the World, and the Green Man agrees to lead them to it.
