Chapter 47: More Tales of the Wheel

While waiting for Moiraine to interrogate Padan Fain, Agelmar tells Egwene and Nynaeve the story of Malkier's fall—how treachery and jealousy stripped the Borderforts, letting Trollocs pour in, and how the infant Lan was anointed king and sent to safety while his parents rode out to die.

Moiraine emerges shaken and reveals what she learned: Fain has been a Darkfriend for over forty years and was made into the Dark One's hound three years ago at Shayol Ghul, compelled to hunt Rand, Mat, and Perrin across the land—he brought the Trollocs to Emond's Field, followed the group through the Ways, and even survived Machin Shin, the Black Wind.

Moiraine warns that the seals on Shayol Ghul are weakening desperately and there is no time to delay. She tells Agelmar the boys are ta'veren with the blood of Manetheren, and insists they must be the ones to fight at the Eye of the World.
