Chapter 46: Fal Dara

The party arrives at Fal Dara, a grim fortress-city in Shienar packed with refugees from the surrounding farms. Lan is hailed as 'Dai Shan' by the guards, who cry for the Golden Crane to fly again. Lord Agelmar welcomes them and reveals that Shienar faces a massive Trolloc buildup at Tarwin's Gap—the other Borderlands are too afraid of their own borders to send aid, and he expects to be outnumbered at least ten to one.

Agelmar begs Moiraine and Lan to stay and fight, but Moiraine insists their true battle is at the Eye of the World. Lan is visibly anguished at refusing to raise Malkier's banner.

As the evening ends, Ingtar brings in a captured madman—recognized by Rand, Mat, and Perrin as Padan Fain—who alternates between whimpering that he was made into a hound by a man with burning eyes and arrogantly claiming he can show Lord Agelmar how to defeat the Shadow.
