Lan rescues Perrin and Egwene from the Whitecloak camp after Byar attempts to trick them into a fatal 'escape.' Moiraine creates a lightning storm as a diversion while Nynaeve brings horses, and the group flees wearing stolen Whitecloak cloaks.

At camp, Nynaeve discovers Perrin's eyes have turned yellow—Moiraine says it is not an illness but cannot be Healed, and connects it to something ordained by the Pattern.

Lan reveals privately that Elyas was once a Warder before trouble with the Red Ajah, and warns Perrin that with the Dark One's prison weakening, little is left to chance in their lives.
