Chapter 36: Web of the Pattern

Rand tells Master Gill an edited version of their troubles. Mat sinks into bitter despair, suspecting everyone around them.

In the inn's library, Rand encounters Loial, a young Ogier stranded at the inn after being mistaken for a Trolloc. Loial left his stedding to see Ogier-planted groves but found them all destroyed or forgotten. Rand finds himself telling Loial the full truth about his journey.

Loial identifies Rand as ta'veren—a person around whom the Wheel of Time bends the Pattern. Loial asks to travel with Rand to Tar Valon, but Rand reluctantly declines, fearing the danger.
