Rand and Mat reach Caemlyn on Bunt's cart, awed by the size of the city and the crowds streaming in to see Logain, the false Dragon being brought to be displayed before Queen Morgase. Bunt warns Rand to hide the heron-mark sword before driving on.

Caemlyn men carry their swords wrapped in red and white cloth, and Rand buys strips to hide the herons. Mat, gaunt and frightened, wants to push on for Tar Valon or Illian, but Rand insists they wait at the inn Thom named, hoping Moiraine and the others will find them.

At The Queen's Blessing, innkeeper Basel Gill recognizes Thom's flute and cloak. Rand tells him Thom is dead; Gill refuses to believe it. He probes whether their trouble involves channeling, then accepts their word and offers beds and a meal for Thom's sake.

Gill reveals Thom was once Court-bard here and rumored close to the young widowed Queen, but left in disgrace after meddling in his nephew's trouble with the Aes Sedai. Gareth Bryne was sent to bring him back in chains, and the writ may still stand. Gill warns the boys to keep Thom's name and any mention of Aes Sedai to themselves.
