Chapter 34: The Last Village
Rand and Mat cross the bridge at Carysford after dark and sleep in a haystack. By morning the Caemlyn Road is thick with travelers heading to see the false Dragon, and local farmers, merchant guards, and Queen's Guards treat them all as Darkfriends. A wagon driver's whip opens a gash above Rand's eye.
At a village inn that night, Rand watches innkeeper Raimun Holdwin take orders from a Fade in the shadows. Holdwin then warns farmer Almen Bunt that a man from Four Kings is offering a hundred crowns for two young thieves with a heron-mark sword.
Rand risks approaching Bunt, who is driving to Caemlyn to see the false Dragon himself and gives them a ride. Bunt talks through the night about Queen Morgase, her Aes Sedai advisor Elaida, and Andor's tradition of sending its heirs to Tar Valon.
Rand dreams of a Halfman dragging Mat, Perrin, and Egwene on tethers, then burning Egwene to ash. A raven plucks out his eye and he wakes at the gates of Caemlyn.
