Chapter 30: Children of Shadow

Perrin broods over the axe at the pool, hating what he might do with it. Elyas tells him to keep it: as long as he hates using it, he will use it wisely. A wolf-sending interrupts—armed riders are closing on the only water for miles. Elyas slips off to fight beside the wolves while Perrin and Egwene hide under the stone fingers of Artur Hawkwing's hand.

Children of the Light find them. When a lance levels at Perrin's chest, Hopper leaps from the dark and tears the man's throat out before being pinned by lances. Perrin loses himself, kills two more Whitecloaks with the axe, and is clubbed down.

He wakes bound in the tent of Lord Captain Geofram Bornhald, with Byar standing over him. Perrin talks his way to a half-truth about the Two Rivers and Shadar Logoth, but Bornhald is not convinced. They will be taken to Amador for the Questioners. For killing two of the Children, Bornhald promises Perrin a gibbet.
