Chapter 3: The Peddler

Padan Fain, a peddler who visits Emond's Field every spring, arrives with his wagon and troubling news from beyond the Two Rivers. He tells the gathered villagers of a war in Ghealdan—a false Dragon has arisen who can actually channel the One Power, and Aes Sedai have ridden south from Tar Valon to deal with him.

The Village Council takes Fain inside the inn for private questioning. Rand, Mat, and their friend Perrin Aybara discuss the news; Perrin reveals he too saw the mysterious black-cloaked rider and received a coin from Moiraine. Nynaeve al'Meara, the village Wisdom, arrives and scolds them for talking about dangerous topics.

Egwene al'Vere, wearing her hair in a braid for the first time, speaks with Rand and reveals she is training to become a Wisdom—possibly in a village outside the Two Rivers.
