The journey to Baerlon takes nearly a week, with Lan teaching the boys to use their weapons each night. Egwene stops braiding her hair, as Aes Sedai do not braid theirs, leading to an argument with Rand. When Mat speaks of going to Illian instead of Tar Valon, Moiraine overhears and delivers a chilling warning: 'Before I let the Dark One have you, I will destroy you myself.' Rand eavesdrops on Moiraine and Egwene, learning about the Five Powers and that another woman in the Two Rivers can channel.

At last they reach Baerlon, a walled town larger than all the Two Rivers villages combined. The Children of the Light are in town, and news comes that Aes Sedai battled the false Dragon in Ghealdan—some may have died. Moiraine takes the name 'Alys' and they enter the Stag and Lion inn.
