Chapter 11: The Road to Taren Ferry

Lan leads the party north at a hard gallop, racing past Watch Hill without stopping. When the horses are nearly spent, Moiraine touches each one in turn and washes away their fatigue with the One Power. Lan tells Rand she cannot do the same for herself, and that only one of them will ride tired.

A Draghkar shrieks down out of the sky and the horses panic. Rand finds himself with Tam's sword half-drawn before he realizes it. Lan says the creature is marking them for the Myrddraal and drives them on. Moiraine raises a thick, icy fog to hide their trail, and they ride blind through the murk for hours.

Before dawn they reach Taren Ferry, a village of houses set high on redstone foundations against the spring floods. Lan hammers Master Hightower out of bed and counts gold into his hand to take them across at once, with as much again on the far bank.
