In the stable, Rand, Mat, and Perrin prepare to leave with Lan. Perrin carries a blacksmith's axe given to him by Master Luhhan. Egwene appears, having deduced their plan, and insists on joining them; Moiraine agrees, saying it is part of the Pattern. Thom Merrilin, hiding in the hayloft, also joins the party, unwilling to face Trollocs alone.

They slip out of Emond's Field by crossing the Winespring Water to avoid village patrols and head north toward Taren Ferry. As they ride, Rand spots a winged creature crossing the moon—a Draghkar, a monster worse than Trollocs, created in the war that ended the Age of Legends. They race for the ferry, knowing the Myrddraal will soon know where they are.
