Chapter 1: An Empty Road

Rand al'Thor and his father Tam travel the Quarry Road through the Westwood toward Emond's Field, bringing brandy and cider for the Bel Tine festival. Along the way, Rand spots a mysterious black-cloaked rider on a black horse whose cloak does not move in the wind; the rider vanishes when Rand looks away.

In the village, they find preparations for Festival underway. Rand's friend Mat Cauthon reveals he saw the same rider three days earlier, and both felt intense hatred emanating from the figure. A gleeman has arrived at the Winespring Inn, raising spirits despite the harsh winter.
